On December 19th, 2011, the town of Somerset voted final project approval on the new model high school project, as did the town of Berkley a few days earlier.
From 1984 until 2010, the town of Berkley sent its grade 9-12 students to Somerset High School under a tuition agreement. In 2008, representatives of both towns began meeting to discuss the tuition agreement and explore possible future educational alternatives including regionalization. In 2009, residents in both towns voted to establish a Regional Planning Board to study the issue, keeping in mind the following goals:
· To continue to provide high quality education to students in both Berkley and Somerset
· To create an equitable partnership between the two communities
· To optimize the financial resources of both towns
· To capitalize on the MSBA offer to provide 66% reimbursement funding for the construction of a new, green, state of the art, model school building - contingent upon regionalization
In 2010, the voters in Somerset and Berkley communities enthusiastically supported the regional agreement proposed by the Planning Board. On July 1,2011 the Somerset Berkley Regional High School District officially came into effect. Somerset and Berkley will open a new high school in the Fall of 2014.
